The Pied Piper's Magical Journey to Pitlochry
Alan Cumming, the charismatic Scottish actor and TV presenter, has embarked on a mission to bring the world of theatre to the picturesque town of Pitlochry. And it seems his charm and vision have worked wonders!
"The idea of coming to this beautiful Highland retreat has excited many," Alan shares. "Even big names like Ian McKellen reached out, eager to be part of this unique experience."
But here's where it gets controversial... Alan's vision involves a departure from the traditional repertory system, a move that has sparked curiosity and debate.
"I wanted to create a nurturing environment for exceptional work, and the old system just wouldn't cut it," he explains. "It's about embracing change and new ideas."
And change is exactly what Alan has brought. He's done away with the repertory system, opting for a more flexible approach to attract top talent. "It's about creating opportunities and making theatre accessible," he adds.
The new season promises an exciting mix of musicals, including the Scottish premiere of 'Once', a show that has been a hot commodity among theatres. "It's a huge win for us!"
But it's not just about the big names and new productions. Alan wants to ensure that the theatre remains a welcoming space for all. "I want to retain our loyal audience while inviting new theatre enthusiasts to discover Pitlochry's magic."
And this is the part most people miss... Alan's journey with Pitlochry Festival Theatre is deeply personal. It's a tribute to the actor who inspired him as a child, a full-circle moment that brings him back to his roots.
"I saw an actor perform, and it changed my life. Now, I want to pay it forward and inspire others," he says with a smile.
As we look ahead to 2027, Alan is already dreaming big, planning to make Pitlochry an international theatre destination. But for now, he invites us to experience his first season and decide for ourselves if his vision is worth the trip.
