Point Nemo: The Remote Ocean Graveyard Where the ISS Will Make Its Final Descent in 2030
The International Space Station (ISS) is set to make its final descent in late 2030, marking the end of its 25-year non-stop presence in orbit. NASA and its global partners have chosen Point Nemo, a remote section of the Pacific Ocean, as the site for its controlled fall. This location, known as the 'Spacecraft Cemetery', is the farthest possible point from any landmass, ensuring minimal impact on human populations and infrastructure.
Point Nemo's extreme isolation, approximately 2,688 kilometers from the nearest landmass, makes it the safest place for large spacecraft reentry. This is not the first time Point Nemo has been used for space debris; Russia's Mir station was guided to this oceanic graveyard in 2001. When the ISS deorbits, it is expected to break apart in stages, with panels and external structures detaching first. Most components will incinerate due to high heat, leaving only the densest parts to sink into the ocean.
This controlled descent is a significant milestone in space exploration, ensuring the safe disposal of the ISS. As low Earth orbit becomes more crowded, the ISS's retirement also signifies a shift towards newer commercial space stations and a globally evolving space strategy.
